Mesothelioma is a highly malignant, terrifying form of cancer caused
by exposure to asbestos dust and fibers. Treatment options are limited
and the outcomes of radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy have been
disappointing. Mesothelioma develops very slowly and symptoms generally
do not appear for 20 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos. By the time
symptoms appear and the disease is diagnosed, the disease is in an
advanced state. Survival rates are very low beyond one or two years from
diagnosis.
Most Massachusetts mesothelioma patients were exposed to asbestos at
work or to asbestos carried home on the clothing of a spouse who worked
around asbestos. Beginning around World War Two, asbestos was heavily
used in ship building and other industrial applications to insulate
pipes and machinery. It was also used in many construction materials
such as ceiling tiles, shingles, electrical wire, insulation, joint
compound, and tile. In addition, asbestos was mined and manufactured in
Massachusetts.
